BIOGRAPHY
Mary had a lifelong love of learning and never missed an opportunity to read. A crib fire burned three fingers from her left hand. Her father was a surgeon on the Nebraska prairie.
Assorted relations were Peter Burnett, the first governor of California, Sam Houston, the first governor of Texas, and cousin Grigsby who married Sarah, the sister of Abraham Lincoln. She is also related to Joseph Paxton who designed the Crystal Palace for Queen Victoria and bequeathed the family crest. Her life encompassed a great sweep of history. When she was born, the only form of transportation was by horse and buggy and she witnessed the arrival of the first railroads and later the automobile. She was 17 years old when the first airplane was invented and lived to see humans step onto the moon. She was allowed to vote for the first time at age 33 on passage of the 19th Amendment and witnessed the Spanish-American, two World Wars and Korea and Viet Nam. One of her daughters was among the first contingent of women to serve as an Officer in the US Army during WWII. The son of a first cousin (2Lt. James Fike Cain), who graduated as first in his class from the University of Nebraska School of Law, was killed in action near Aachen, Germany in WWII. She lived in Nebraska City, Nebraska and is interred in Steele Cemetery in Falls City, Nebraska adjacent to her husband.
