BIOGRAPHY

 

David’s mother, Mary Hummer nee Rhodes, was also born in Pennsylvania and her parents were of German extraction.  His father was Jacob Hummer.  David was the third of nine children but his father died when he was quite young miring his early life in poverty.  His parents were part of the first great expansion of America across the Appalachian Mountains into the Ohio Valley.  And David was part of the second expansion west of the Mississippi River.

 

David was educated in Pennsylvania and lived there until the age of 17.  He learned the trade of being a tailor in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.   In 1837, he moved to McArthur in Vinton County, Ohio.  Ten years later in 1847, he moved again to Middleport, Ohio.  In 1871 he moved to Greenleaf Township in Kansas and took up a homestead of 160 acres on Section 7.

 

In 1882, he relocated into the town of Greenleaf, Kansas operating a merchant tailoring store.

 

On March 17, 1840, David married Mary Ann Kelch in Athens, Ohio some 25 miles away from his home in McArthur, Ohio.  Mary Ann was born on November 8, 1822 in Nelsonville, Ohio being the daughter of Philip and Sarah A. Kelch.  She passed away in Greenleaf, Kansas, on February 19, 1886 and is buried in the Greenleaf Cemetery.

 

David Hummer was a member of the Republican Party and belonged to the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 232.  He was also a longstanding member of the Presbyterian Church in Greenleaf.

                   b. October 10, 1866 in Middleport, Meigs County, Ohio

                   d. September 26, 1935 in Falls City Richardson County, NE

 

In the 1850 Census he was living in Salisbury Township, Meigs County, Ohio [along the Ohio River on the West Virginia border] and employed as a “Tailor”

 

In the 1860 Census he was living in Salisbury Township, Meigs County, Ohio and was employed as a “Tailor”

 

In the 1870 Census he was living in Middleport, Meigs County, Ohio [on the Ohio River] and was employed as a “Custom Tailor”

 

In March, 1885 was living in Greenleaf, Washington County, KS
